The slapstick is a theatrical prop made of two wooden slats that produces a loud snapping sound when struck. Over time, the word came to refer to a whole genre of comedy built around exaggerated movement, sound, timing, collision and surprise.
For Kim Doeon, the choice of title is an explicit declaration of intent, a nod to the album’s playful and unpredictable character.
While SLAPSTICK retains some of the sensibility of his 2022 debut Damage, it takes Kim Doeon’s music into a more open and unpredictable territory. The album drifts between moods, textures and genres, with sudden shifts, unexpected collisions and playful changes of direction that echo the logic of slapstick comedy. Drawing from ambient music and the experimental electronic traditions of Japan, with echoes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kankyō Ongaku, the Korean gayageum meets synthesizers, drum machines and processed sounds, while traces of the European electronic tradition, from Kraftwerk to Daft Punk, surface along the way. But these references never settle into straightforward quotation, melting instead into something distinctly Kim Doeon. There is a sense that Kim is carving out his own corner of electronic music, developing a new vocabulary shaped not only by his personal voice, but by the cultural context he comes from.
Dreamy and cinematic, SLAPSTICK often feels as if it is creating images as much as sounds. At times it could be the soundtrack to a videogame; at others, an animated film. Each track feels like a painted scene. There is a strong sense of movement in the music, with sounds suggesting shapes, gestures and changing spaces. Sounds overlap, drift and dissolve rather than always following a clear melodic path. Small fragments suddenly come into focus before slipping away again, rhythms shift underneath them, and sounds seem to escape the frame of the composition.
The music can feel immediate and playful, but there is always something more intricate moving beneath the surface. Kim lets different sounds coexist without forcing them into a fixed hierarchy, allowing melodies to emerge, disappear and reappear in altered forms. Soft-edged and colourful on the surface, but full of strange turns, hidden details and unexpected collisions.
